Marta promised Uncle Joe to take at least a week to look over his multipurpose law conglomerate before giving up and going back to Miami and return to the high paced, underpaid position in the governmental establishment. She spent her first two nights with him and Dolly, going into the office each day. It became clear to her that Uncle Joseph was tired and that Dolly worried about his health. She tried to avoid the familial pressure and make her decision based on her own needs. However, remembering how they supported her over the years, guilt became a motivating force in her decision.

Her first major decision was to sell the condo with all its furnishings. Even entering the front door depressed her, a reminder of what a fool she had been. Joe tried to convince her not to make a hasty decision; but she remained determined, telling him that even if she stayed, going in the condo was too unpleasant. On her third work day, she did research and made appointments with several realtors. By the end of the day, she had located a realtor she liked.

Denise possessed gorilla-sized salesmanship in a petite, shapely figure. Marta admired the woman’s spirit and aggressiveness. She wore a chic suit in grey flannel with a flaring peplum accenting her tiny waist and rounded hips. A bit of décolleté rose over a deep-cut silk blouse.

They met across coffee in a popular cafe. Contrary to Marta’s nature, she found herself confiding in the woman after she asked why she intended to sale the condominium having owned it only three months. Denise narrowed her brown eyes and spat out a sharp curse that made Marta laugh. “What a S.O.B! I have no idea what you‘ll do about the jerk, but if it were me he’d regret ever meeting me.”

Marta smiled. “Uncle Joe wants me to sue him for breach of promise and sue his wife for alienation of affection.”

“Yeah, that’s good, but does he have any money to go after? If you’ve been supporting him, it’s doubtful; anyway, I’d want a more immediate pleasure of hurting him where he lives.”

Although enjoying the beautiful woman and her spicy personality, Marta could not see herself doing anything spiteful. She felt like squishing his head beneath her foot and wished she could in a way, but she had seen too many petty legal fights between men and women to care for involving herself in one. Nevertheless, it seemed she would found her first friend in Chicago. Approximately the same age, they had similar interests, and were successful, professional women. Denise swore she knew dozens of eligible men who she should meet. Marta didn’t give in to her aggressive push in that direction, telling her that it would be a while before she could even think about an involvement.

Denise shook her head. “Mistake. The best way to get one man out of your system is with another one. Also, that’s a wonderful way to send the message of how little his actions affect you.
